Teenager Entrusts Foster Parents With Care Of His Pet Bunny, They 'Forget' And Blame Him

We pet owners know that our pets are our babies, and there are very few people we trust to give them the care and attention they deserve adequately. When push comes to shove, sometimes we need to arrange for some last-minute pet care. Only sometimes, pet sitters fall short of expectations. And this is something we are just not willing to compromise on. 

The original poster of this thread is a fifteen-year-old male living in a foster home with two foster parents. He entrusts them ONCE to care for his pet bunny while he was away visiting his boyfriend, and much to his surprise when he returns he sees that his pet bunny has very clearly not been cared for. This is just not cool. Not only is the bunny a living breathing creature who deserves to be cared for, but he is also very near and dear to OP's heart. It just seems in poor taste for these foster parents to blow off his wishes and then turn the blame around on OP for entrusting them with this task to begin with.

    Font - Okay, so I (15M) have been living with my foster parents (51F & 52M) since Jan. 3rd (this year) and brought my pet bunny with me. We made an agreement about him. I care for him everyday on my own. Cleans his bed, gives him food & water, brush him, play with him and pay for everything, except for vet bills. The only case were they care for him, is if I'm out of the house. (f.x I'm with my boyfriend, or mom.)

    Seems like a pretty fair and reasonable agreement if you ask us.

    Font - So since I am on winter break this week I decided to visit my boyfriend Wednesday - Friday (today). I asked my foster parents if it was okay, and they said yes. When I left wednesday morning I gave them instructions on how to care for Tony, my bunny. I said how much food and water he needs, and to remind them to open his cage for a few hours so he can play.

    Okay, clear instructions were provided, the foster parents have no excuse not to have followed them.

    Font - BUT when I came home today I saw that his food bowl was empty, the jar of his food hadn't been touched, his water bowl was empty, and it sure didn't look he have been outside of his cage. I was PISSED. This pet is my best friend, and he means alot to me. When I asked my foster mom for an explanation she said that she "forgot." I got even more pissed and told her "it wasn't that complicated. Sure, he can go a day without getting brushed, getting my full attention for hours and stuff. I did

I think rabbits are one of a type of animal that needs to be eating continually or its digestive system shuts down. OP there are some types of feeders that allow for extra food to be stored - enough for a weekend. You might want to invest in one of those for the rabbit "kibbles", as well as throwing in some extra carrots/hay, next time you're not going to be there.

    Font - Lulu_531 · 5 days ago Partassipant [1] NTA. See if you can get a self feeder for pellets and a feeder for hay. Rabbits need to eat constantly and need unlimited access to hay. You would be able to make sure he has access to plenty of food any time you're gone this way.

I would look for a local kid who could pop in when you're gone and feed the bunny, or someone whose house you could bring him to when you're gone? (I don't know if people 'do' that with bunnies?) Anyway, clearly she's not up for helping, so you now have choices to make for future care of your pet.

They shouldn't have let you go away under the impression they would care for the animal if they had no intention of doing so. More likely she forgot and is now scrambling to blame you
